Many Haitians are unconvinced by the army’s promise and according to Jean-Bertrand Aristide only the United States can bring some semblance of order within the Haitian army. Following the Financial News, four executions carried out in Guyana last month prompted Amnesty International to issue a report expressing concern over the resumption of executions in Guyana and calls on the Guyanese government to change all death sentences. In the last segment, football fans around the world bade farewell to the Cameroon’s World Cup team after a 3-2 defeat against England in the quarter-finals. Secondly, a student is killed and three others seriously injured in violent clashes between the police and demonstrators over social and political discontent in the Dominican Republic. Following the Financial News, the Executive Board of the International Coffee Organization met in London to discuss the prospects of a new coffee agreement to assist in stabilizing the fluctuating prices of coffee. In the final segment, the ACP Working Group on Bananas meets in Brussels on Friday to formulate a common position for the regulation of the banana trade in Europe after 1992. He is attempting to convince the Dutch that Suriname’s Bush Negro population is in dire need of humanitarian assistance and the guerrilla war in Suriname’s interior can only be ended with official Dutch assistance. Secondly, whilst Yesu Persaud is pressured by the Guyanese government due to his opposition to groups supporting the re-election of Desmond Hoyte, his popularity continues to grow amongst members of the civil reform movement, Guyanese Action for Reform and Democracy. Following the Financial News, the Speaker of Montserrat’s Legislative Council suggests that Montserratians are not interested in seeking independence and comments on the remarks by the Chief Minister that the British government is racist on the question of granting nationality status. According to Jessop and Thompson, unless the Caribbean leaders and public and private sectors officials address the growing challenges of the region with a greater sense of urgency, the Caribbean will be left behind in the international arena. Secondly, the ACP Working Group on Bananas held a meeting in Brussels to examine Caricom’s proposals for the regulation of the banana trade in Europe. In the next segment, a study entitled “Europe 1992 and the Caribbean: Crisis, Challenge and Opportunity” by Wilberne Persaud purports that prolong dependence on preferential markets in Europe without more efficient production and diversity will increase the Caribbean’s economic and social problems. Following the Financial News, the British charter travel to Jamaica, Barbados and the Dominican Republic have been affected by the rise in British interest rates. In Suriname, the government is accusing the Dutch of improper behaviour after the opposition politicians in Holland hold talks with Ronnie Brunswick, Suriname’s Jungle Commando. However, the Dutch government refused Ronnie Brunswick to meet with Holland’s Foreign Minister and accommodated talks between Brunswick and senior civil servants. Following the Financial News, the Caricom Heads of Government gear up for the Jamaican summit at the end of July and many of the deadlines set out in the Grand Anse Declaration in Grenada last year have not been met. The consequences of a free trade agreement between the US and Mexico for the Caribbean countries is also explored. Following the Financial News, in its fight for free and fair elections in Guyana, the Guyanese Action for Reform and Democracy (GUARD) is supporting moves by the opposition parties to form a common slate for the upcoming elections and urging the Commonwealth Secretary General to send an urgent mission to Guyana. Cheddi Jagan, opposition leader, is also meeting with Washington's senators and congressmen to ensure that an observer team led by Jimmy Carter is present during the upcoming Guyanese elections. In addition to the seven asylum seekers yesterday, the fourteen refugees are now requesting safe passage out of the country. Secondly, in order for the Caribbean countries to expand trade with the European Economic Community, the EEC recommends that the Caribbean nations reorganise their economies, improve marketing techniques and prepare for tougher competition in European markets. In the Financial News segment, Abigail Bakan comments on her paper entitled “Labour and Capital in Canada and the Caribbean” presented at the 14th Annual Conference of the Society for Caribbean Studies in Northern England. In the next segment, the Brazilian exporters react to the return of the international export quotas to control coffee supplies and prices. Following, a Haitian delegation is at the United Nations to gain support and assistance for the country’s upcoming elections and explores the redrafting of the 1987 election law to align it with the present political status of Haiti. The report concludes with the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights in New York criticising the Dominican Republic for its treatment of Haitian sugar workers. Following the Financial News, the major opposition party in Guyana, the People’s Progressive party, is a force to be reckoned with as it gains momentum on the campaign trail by attracting large crowds at public meetings. The report concludes with an ultimatum issued by six of Haiti’s political parties to President Trouillot for the arrest of Roger Lafontant and Williams Regala by noon today.
