Labour has swept into office with the biggest majority that they ever had, while the Conservatives are taking stock of a shattering defeat that left them temporarily leaderless and split over Europe. Britain’s new Foreign Secretary said that along with Europe, improving relations with the Commonwealth would also be a priority. They would be arguing for a better deal with Europe for Caribbean bananas. Immigration and entry into Europe would be one of the issues that the Afro-Caribbean community may take up with the new government. The island's rival three political parties comment on what they think are the major issues for Dominica. In Grenada, unemployment is the major issue as the island goes to the polls. In the Canada provincial elections, Jamaican Alvin Curling was the only success story among the three Caribbean-born candidates. Robert Vesco, an American fugitive financier has been arrested by Cuban authorities. Washington remains interested in Vesco who fled the US twenty-three years ago to avoid fraud charges. Ambassador to the Eastern Caribbean, Edwin Laurent expressed concern and intends to press for a re-consideration of proposed changes to the EU banana protocol. Winston Dookeran, now an economist at the Harvard Institute, states that CARICOM as an integration movement is obsolete. Tony Fraser reports that Dookeran makes his comments on regionalism in the context of globalization. Prime Minister Owen Arthur states that the people of Barbados would be consulted about its membership in the OECS.
