    With pre-election violence on the upsurge in Haiti, the Independent Electoral Council protests against the reappearance of Williams Regala, one of the most feared man in the country who was the alleged instigator of the violence that aborted the 1987 elections. Secondly, the ACP Working Group on Bananas held a meeting in Brussels to examine Caricom’s proposals for the regulation of the banana trade in Europe. In the next segment, a study entitled “Europe 1992 and the Caribbean: Crisis, Challenge and Opportunity” by Wilberne Persaud purports that prolong dependence on preferential markets in Europe without more efficient production and diversity will increase the Caribbean’s economic and social problems. Following the Financial News, the British charter travel to Jamaica, Barbados and the Dominican Republic have been affected by the rise in British interest rates. In Suriname, the government is accusing the Dutch of improper behaviour after the opposition politicians in Holland hold talks with Ronnie Brunswick, Suriname’s Jungle Commando. However, the Dutch government refused Ronnie Brunswick to meet with Holland’s Foreign Minister and accommodated talks between Brunswick and senior civil servants. The report concludes with a victory by the Jamaican silver medallist, Grace Jackson, in the 200 meters race at the International Athletics Club Grand Prix in Edinburgh.

    As Haiti prepares for elections in November, the return of two key military leaders, Roger Lafontant and Williams Regala, sends shockwaves throughout the country. There are also speculations of a pending coup to reinstate the former Haitian president, Leslie Manigat, who is expected to arrive in Haiti tomorrow. Following the Financial News, the Caricom Heads of Government gear up for the Jamaican summit at the end of July and many of the deadlines set out in the Grand Anse Declaration in Grenada last year have not been met. In the next segment, seven Cubans have taken refuge in the Czechoslovakian embassy in Havana. They are members of the opposition groups in Cuba who have been asking for permission to leave the island to publicise their views abroad. The report concludes with the Jamaican sprinter, Merlene Ottey recording the faster time this year in the 200 meters at the Grand Prix Athletics Meeting in Nice.

    The president of Haiti’s Council of State says that the return of Roger Lafontant and Williams Regala has jeopardized the upcoming elections in November and recommends the arrest of these two former military leaders given their alleged record of torture and murder in the past. Secondly, over 40 Haitians drowned and 250 survived as they attempted to sail to the Bahamas as illegal immigrants. In the Dominican Republic, election results are still pending two months after the presidential elections and the instability of the country is exacerbated by a current shortage of diesel fuel on the island. Following the Financial News, St. Lucia’s Deputy Prime Minister held meetings with the British Department of Transport in London seeking to convince them of a need for a second air service out of the UK to St. Lucia.
