    Saint Lucia's Prime Minister John Compton has spoken out to try and offset a national strike by the country's most powerful trade unions. Dominica's Prime Minister Dame Eugenia Charles has difficulties accepting the allegations which seek to implicate the St. Lucian government in the misappropriation of UN funds. Jamaica's Foreign Minister Seymour Mullings is in Washington meeting with US officials and members of the Congress to discuss US-Jamaica trade relations. In Bermuda, the government is still to announce the date on which the referendum on independence will be held. A high ranking Barbadian Church official is calling for whites to join the country's police force. Dean of St. Michael's Anglican Cathedral, Harold Crichlow suggested that whites were needed to combat harassment against mainly white visitors. Countries worldwide are preparing to celebrate Victory in Europe Day and the end of World War II.

    This report highlights the mourning of Dame Nita Barrow in the region and beyond. Dame Nita was the sister of Barbados' first Prime Minister Errol Barrow and was appointed Governor-General of Barbados in 1990 following an outstanding career in national, regional and international public service. Journalist Bertram Niles comments on the funeral arrangements and what the Barbados government had to say on the issue. People on the street of Bridgetown give their reactions to Dame Nita's death. Errol Barrow's daughter, Lesley explains what Dame Nita meant to her personally and comments on the achievements of her aunt. Caribbean Report has Dame Nita Barrow's last public speech given when she distributed gifts to the needy at the local Salvation Army. As tributes pour in from across the region, St. Vincent's Ambassador to the UN and OAS, Kingsley Lane, spoke on behalf of Caribbean diplomats in Washington. A Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group which includes Jamaica's Foreign Minister Seymour Mullings has been set up to visit Nigeria to help resolve that country's problem with the Commonwealth. Nigeria was suspended from the grouping after the military regime executed nine environmental activists including author Ken Saro-Wima. In Guyana, Foreign Minister Bharrat Jagdeo is hoping for an early resumption of operations at the Omai Gold Mines. Orin Gordon assesses the impact of the forced closure of the mine. In the British Parliament, Labour MP Bernie Grant raised the issue of voluntary repatriation of members of the black community by referring to the recent Brixton riots.

A third unusual murder in Trinidad has local police considering a possible link with the killing of former Attorney General Selwyn Richardson. BWIA's Chief Operations Officer, Ed Wegel states that the airline's offer for shareholding in LIAT depends on a number of factors yet to be assessed. Jamaica's Deputy Prime Minister Seymour Mullings states that his country has taken the necessary steps to ensure it can compete in the global economy. Previously granted but unused European Development Fund monies may form part of a new aid package for the ACP countries. Both Montserrat's Chief Minister, Reuben Meade and Ambassador Edwin Laurent expressed concern about the possible effects this could have on the Caribbean region.
