    Opponents of former Guyana President - Desmond Hoyte are accusing him of precipitating the collapse of the People’s National Congress (PNC) with his decision to expel his former Deputy - Hamilton Greene from the party. Greene was charged and expelled for attacking Mr. Hoyte in public – correspondent Sharif Khan reports. Three condemned men are challenging the constitutionality of the reclassification of death row inmates; as a result the reclassification process has been suspended. Florizelle O'Connor, coordinator of the Jamaica Council for Human Rights explains the grounds of the legal challenge to correspondent Yvette Row. The authority of the Trinidad and Tobago’s House of Representatives is being challenged in court. British Queen’s Counsel - Jeffery Robinson and MP Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj claims that the Speaker of the House infringed the rights of MP Subash Panday, when the speaker asked him to withdraw an allegation of corruption made against unnamed government ministers - under Section 14 of the Constitution - correspondent Tony Fraser reports. Warren Christopher- US Secretary of State announced that US President Bill Clinton and exiled Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide are scheduled to meet. The US was allotting an additional 5 million dollars to process asylum applications in Haiti. European and US business people interested in investing in Cuba are being invited to attend a conference in Europe. In an interview with correspondent Yvette Rowe, Richard O'Donoghue, Director of Euro Money Conferences in London explains why the conference is being held in Europe. Sahadeo Basdeo, of the UWI International Relations Institute says that the Caribbean wants to see Cuba accelerate its move towards democracy and the introduction of human rights.

Britain's beleaguered national health service, once the envy of the world, is sending its managers to Cuba for advice on how to run the organization. Belize's Minister of Health and Sport, Ruben Campos comments on how Belize has, so far, taken advantage of Cuban medical expertise. Bertram Niles reports on the findings of Dr. R. Wiseman's study on whether doubles in Trinidad are a national delicacy or a national disaster. At the Scientific Meeting of the Caribbean Medical Research Council there were concerns that Caribbean governments may be ignoring valuable medical research in the region.     In this report: Caribbean countries are moving from gentle persuasion to mild scare tactics as powerful US interests threatens to crush their crucial banana industries. In his most recent study, William Demas advises CARICOM countries against seeking individual entry into NAFTA. Cuban dissident Yndamiro Restano was freed following an appeal by French human rights group, France-Libertes. The US-based Pastors for Peace, an inter-religious foundation for community organization, is planning its fifth caravan to Cuba later this month. Reverend Lucius Walker comments on Cuba's current economic conditions. Industrial unrest continues in St. Lucia as the commission of inquiry moves into its second day. Meanwhile, some Radio St. Lucia workers are terminated. The West Indies cricket team picked up an easy victory against Leicestershire. Secondly, the request to remove Haiti’s Prime Minister Rene Preval has greeted the Preval’s government in the New Year. US President, Bill Clinton is to visit St. Thomas on a family vacation and the Clinton’s unofficial visit is highlighted.     A day after the British general elections and the public is still digesting the implications of the results. Labour has swept into office with the biggest majority that they ever had, while the Conservatives are taking stock of a shattering defeat that left them temporarily leaderless and split over Europe. Britain’s new Foreign Secretary said that along with Europe, improving relations with the Commonwealth would also be a priority. They would be arguing for a better deal with Europe for Caribbean bananas. Immigration and entry into Europe would be one of the issues that the Afro-Caribbean community may take up with the new government. Next, a group of Euro-MPs are about to visit four Caribbean banana producing states to get a better grasp of the importance of EU banana regime to ACP countries and EU suppliers. Next, Cuba’s President has predicted a lower than expected Cuban sugar harvest this year due to the effects of hurricane Lili and the tightening of the US embargo. Next, divers are still searching for the bodies off the coast of St Vincent. A Trinidad airplane carrying cricket fans crashed into the sea. Finally, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the British government would be guilty of inhumane treatment if it deported a dying man to his birth place in St Kitts. The man a convicted drug courier who was ordered by the Immigration Authorities to be returned home has only weeks to live after being diagnoses with aids.

    There are calls for the Saint Lucian government to step down over alleged misuse of UN funds. The latest criticism of the Compton Administration has come from within its own ranks. Financial Services Minister Rufus Bousquet questions whether the government could rise above these allegations. Also, the country's banana farmers and six of the most powerful trade unions have proposed a two-day national strike. In Jamaica, a coroner's inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the death of prisoner Ivan Morgan. A change in American policy clamping down on future Cuban immigration has received mixed reaction from Havana to Washington. Rosie Hayes speaks to Cubans waiting to apply for entry into America. Dr. Philip Brenner, Professor of International Relations at the American University comments on whether there is more to this decision. In cricket, the British press has already been predicting a serious defeat for the West Indies. Hugh Crosskill reports on the reaction of the West Indies captain and fans to this defeat.

Norman George Cowans, Jamaican fast bowler signed a two year contract to play with Hampshire in the English County Championship and will link up with Antiguan Winston Benjamin. And, Dolly Kippin, Jamaica born British community leader is to be evicted from her London flat in the same housing state where she helped police track down the murderers of a policeman.
