    Trinidad and Tobago confirmed today that Minister Extraordinaire, A.N.R. Robinson, in the coalition regime is the government’s nominee for the president of the republic. However, the opposition has its own presidential candidate in the person of High Court Judge, Anthony Lucky. In the following, the Nevis Reformation Party is in election mode although local elections are not constitutionally due until July. Secession of Nevis to secede from St. Kitts will be one of the election issues. Next, the US Agricultural Consular based in the Dominican Republic says that the Caribbean represents an important export market for American food and beverages. However, the permanent representative for the Jamaican Agricultural Society shared different views. In the next segment, Cuban education system is on show this week at an education conference. Cuba’s health and education systems are still seen as models by many in the region and the rest of the developing world. Also, Cuba has again reacted to a report from the US government which outlines plans for a democratic transition in the country. A document published that the US government says it would cost billions of dollars to fund the return of democratic rule once President Fidel Castro let the US in.

    Debt forgiveness and women's development are at the top of the agenda at the UN World Summit for Social Development. Boutros Boutros-Ghali, UN Secretary-General and America's First Lady Hillary Clinton both addressed the Summit and focused on the improvement of conditions for women in the developing world. In Saint Vincent, Prime Minister James Mitchell gave his first public reaction to the US drug allegations. Mitchell criticised the report and challenged whether a country could be condemned by a unsubstantiated report. Meanwhile in Jamaica, Edward Seaga, leader of the Opposition Labour Party, criticised the challenge to his leadership and spoke about the recent resignation of party Chairman Bruce Golding. The OECS plans to reach out and increase trade with the French Overseas Departments. Keith Fletcher has been sacked as England's cricket manager following a disastrous England tour of Australia.

    As the Gulf crisis looms on the horizon, Trinidad and Tobago is assessing its options and stepping up with its domestic preparations to deal with this matter should a crisis occur. Meetings are apace with the Prime Minister and Leaders of the Opposition parties and other representatives in the country in order to formulate measures to protect the population. An update from Dominica and Cuba on their views on the situation in Iraq is also provided. In Antigua, there is uncertainty as to whether Mr. John St. Louis, Antigua’s Finance Minister has submitted his resignation. Dr. Ivor Heathe, Leader of the Opposition, United Democratic Party provides his perspective regarding some of Mr. St. Louis’ plans for the future. He contends there was no announcement on whether Mr. Louis had resigned given that he has been out of the country for quite a while. Expatriates in Nevis are very disturbed as they have been targeted for arrest of drug charges. They claim that marijuana is being planted in their homes and personal property by people who tip off the police. One expatriate believes that they are being charged unfairly and it may stem from Nevisians becoming unhappy that expatriates are being hired for jobs which they would like to have. Both the Prime Minister of Nevis and the Foreign Minister in charge of Nevisian Affairs have refuted these claims by the expatriates of unfair charges laid on them. In Canada, great publicity is being mounted on Ben Johnson who will run his first race after he was stripped of his 100 metre Olympic gold medal. Concerns are raised as to why Johnson is making this comeback at the age of 29. Mr. Mark Lee, Canadian track and field commentator, believes that Johnson has the personality to perform and he is also a tremendous gifted physical athlete who can perform at his optimal ability.

    Despite recent talks between the two countries aimed at resolving the dispute, mass deportation of Haitians from the Dominican Republic continue. Next, the organisation, Haitian Dominican Women’s Movement is protesting what they have labelled the inhumane repatriation programme of the Dominican Republic government. In the following, Caricom leaders are having a summit in Antigua. After years of complaints that the decision making process was too tedious, the leaders have signalled the determination to put the integration movement on the fast track. Next, secession for St. Kitts is running into strong opposition way ahead of the February 24th local elections. In the following, the European and United Sates differences over Helms-Burton seems set to go to a World Trade Organisation dispute panel. The WTO director, will name three panelist to arbitrate over the controversial anti-Cuban legislation. Next, Guyana’s President, Dr. Cheddi Jagan is said to be in the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in a stable but serious condition. In the final segment, in response to a season of controversial calypsoes, Prime Minister, Basdeo Panday says that the government of Trinidad and Tobago is prepared to pass legislation to prevent calypsonians from dividing and denigrating the society
