    Debt forgiveness and women's development are at the top of the agenda at the UN World Summit for Social Development. Boutros Boutros-Ghali, UN Secretary-General and America's First Lady Hillary Clinton both addressed the Summit and focused on the improvement of conditions for women in the developing world. In Saint Vincent, Prime Minister James Mitchell gave his first public reaction to the US drug allegations. Mitchell criticised the report and challenged whether a country could be condemned by a unsubstantiated report. Meanwhile in Jamaica, Edward Seaga, leader of the Opposition Labour Party, criticised the challenge to his leadership and spoke about the recent resignation of party Chairman Bruce Golding. The OECS plans to reach out and increase trade with the French Overseas Departments. Keith Fletcher has been sacked as England's cricket manager following a disastrous England tour of Australia.

    United States President Bill Clinton is expected to arrive in Barbados later today to attend the Summit with Caricom leaders. On the agenda would be the Bridgetown Declaration and the Plan of Action. Topics to be dealt with are trade enhancement, the peculiar problems of smaller economies and the challenge they face and human resources development. For the Heads of Government of the Windward Islands it is the United States attitude to the banana industry which is the main priority. Next, Jamaica’s Minister of National Security was forced to cancel his trip to Barbados because of gun violence in West Kingston that left four people dead and at least nine wounded. Next, there is disagreement in St Lucia today over the supervision of an election code of conduct. The governing United Workers Party and the Opposition of an election code of conduct. The governing United Workers Party and the Opposition Labour Party signed an agreement promising to fight clean elections. Finally, the black cowboys of America are having their rodeo week in Texas. Many of them are the descendants of the Buffalo soldiers as they are called. The men who first fought in the United States army some one hundred and fifty years ago, former slaves.

    United States President, Bill Clinton, has been approached by Caribbean governments asking him to help avert a pending strike by American Airlines. They fear that the strike could have disastrous consequences for Caribbean tourism. Next, Minister of Culture Armando Hart has been dismissed from the Cuban government. Mr. Hart has been a member of the Cuban government from the early days of the revolution which brought Fidel Castro to power. In the following, former Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Milton died. He was the country’s first post independence prime minister and helped build the St. Vincent Labour Party. Next, Caribbean Americans and Jews in New York are sharply divided over the murder trial of Lemrick Nelson Jr. He was found innocent five years ago. However the second trial came up differently. Next, the men accused of the murder of Stephen Lawrence of Jamaican parentage refused to say anything that could incriminate them as the inquest continued. They claimed the legal right to stay quiet when they took the stand. In the final segment, a twenty nine year old woman of Caribbean origin has been named one of this year’s Academy Award film nominees. She has been nominated for her role in the film Secrets and Lies.
