Continuing engineering education: An effective means of technology transfer

Abstract
This paper discusses the role that Continuing Engineering Education (CEE) can play as an effective means of technology transfer, especially in developing countries, when compared to other transfer mechanisms. Due to its flexibility, CEE is able to respond rapidly to short-term needs and technological innovations, which, in contrast, is difficult for the long-term basic education of universities. The experiences of the Continuing Education Committee of the Faculty of Engineering, the University of the West Indies (UWI), over the preceding 16 years in providing CEE are summarized and compared with those of several other countries. However, the need for CEE providers to develop more tailor-made courses and programmes, utilizing the electronic media and satellites to give better productivity to the research and development process in industry, is emphasized
