Abstract
This paper examines the notion of linguistic conflict in Caribbean education, against the background of a description of the language situation and attitudes towards language in the region, as well as the linguistic demands of the education systems. It is concluded that enlightened educational policy cannot be based only on the pedagogical methods implied by the linguistic relationship between the languages in contact, but must derive direction equally from the sociolinguistic attitudes present in the society.
