This has led to serious shortages of food, medicine and other basic necessities. Prices have continued to rise despite stern measures taken by the government, and there are fears that the economic situation could spark serious social unrest. The conference, which had over 100 attendees representing a variety of trade unions, included discussions on racism in the workplace, immigration laws and workers’ rights. Beverley interviews Ken Gill, Chairman of the TUC’s Equal Rights Committee, and Gloria Mills, Trinidadian born black trade union leader. The two discuss what the Equal Rights Committee was doing to represent black workers; and the importance of the conference in terms of the trade union movement taking racism seriously respectively.
