Abstract
This programme features highlights of pre-election activities in Antigua and Barbuda, and power struggles within the ranks of the Antigua Labour Party in the wake of the imminent retirement of Prime Minister Vere Bird Snr. It also reports on the devastating effects of inflation in the Dominican Republic, takes a brief look at issues coming out of a conference on black workers in trade unions and includes highlights of the 4th test match between the West Indies and England at Headingley.

2. The Dominican Republic is experiencing its worst inflationary crisis in the past decade. This has led to serious shortages of food, medicine and other basic necessities. Prices have continued to rise despite stern measures taken by the government, and there are fears that the economic situation could spark serious social unrest. 3. Beverley Treasure reports on a conference on black workers in trade unions, organized by the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The conference, which had over 100 attendees representing a variety of trade unions, included discussions on racism in the workplace, immigration laws and workers’ rights. Beverley interviews Ken Gill, Chairman of the TUC’s Equal Rights Committee, and Gloria Mills, Trinidadian born black trade union leader. The two discuss what the Equal Rights Committee was doing to represent black workers; and the importance of the conference in terms of the trade union movement taking racism seriously respectively. Geest, one of the leading importers of fruit in the U.K., and well known for its banana imports from the Caribbean has expanded its interests with the takeover of a local cut-flower wholesaler in Birmingham. Hugh Crosskill interviews Bob Stotts of Geest’s Marketing Division, regarding opportunities for Caribbean growers of cut flowers to get into the British market. (10:11-12:11)
