Why teach? A comparative study of Caribbean and North American college students' attraction to teaching
Abstract
This study investigates reasons why student teachers (66 males and 132 females) in four Eastern Caribbean teachers' training colleges (Antigua, Dominica, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines) chose teaching as a career. Results indicate the major attraction to be inter-personal in nature--"special interest in dealing with children and/or young people." Overall findings coincide neatly with similar research mounted in the United States by Jantzen (1981)
