Abstract
The first section of this paper analyses world, political, social and economic trends in order to predict the types of transformations that are likely to take place by the year 2000. The issues dealt with in this section include political and economic restructuring, threats to the environment and the possible impact of science and technology. In the second section, the transformed and complex world of the twenty-first century serves as the background of assessing the stringent demands that survival and growth will make on developing countries. Current educational practices in Latin America and the Caribbean are examined, and weaknesses that are considered as impediments to development are identified. In the last section, proposals are made concerning the contribution that the Organization of American States (OAS) could make, through education, in preparing the citizens of its member states to meet the challenge of the twenty-first century.
