Abstract

The paper traces the historical development of the denominational sector as part of the wider national education system. It examines the Teaching Service Regulations as they affect the relationship between the boards, teachers, and the central authorities, and looks at the management of the Board schools. The relative academic performance of state and denominational schools is also analysed.
