This study investigated the characteristics of the effective teacher as perceived by a sample of 160 primary and 60 secondary school students, and 60 primary and 30 secondary school teachers in a selected Caribbean territory. Results indicated agreement among students and teachers with respect to a number of teacher characteristics perceived as being very important for effective teaching: 1) the giving of examples by the teacher, 2) properly planned lessons by the teacher, and 3) teacher's knowledge of student learning. Sex differences that emerged pointed to a male preference for teacher characteristics reflective of authority and dominance, while females regarded organizational and nurturance-related characteristics as being of greater importance |
