Information has been unearthed that indicates that the Hell Yard Band of 1940 had three-note kettle pans, thereby strengthening the contention by many that 'notes' were first placed on pans in Hell Yard. The festival is an Emancipation community celebration, highlighting the African contribution to the development of pan. The Pan School’s first group of children came from the St. Mary's EC Primary School in Tacarigua. Parry’s Pan School went on to place in several National Panorama and School Festivals. Codrington’s interpretation of the Mighty Sparrow’s ‘Doh Back Back’ in the soloist preliminaries was met with heartfelt approval and landed her in the semifinals of the competition. Soloist and duets showcased their skills in an attempt to win cash prizes and qualify for appearances in the major Ramajay showcase in July. Eighteen soloists and nine duets appeared before the judges. They were required to choose a selection from a total of fifteen calypsoes.
