Aspinal, London, 2010-07-01T12:47:22Z)This is a vintage postcard featuring men and women visiting the pitch lake circa the turn of the 20th century. Their attire seems inappropriate for such an outing but it was appropriate for the early 20th century. The lake looks muddy and wet with little puddles. At least one person is sheltering under an open umbrella and another appears to be having a closer look at the pitch. There are trees and a single story building on the horizon.Item The Pitch Lake, Trinidad, B.W.I.(2010-05-14T12:34:04Z)This is a picture showing the expanse of the pitch lake at La Brea, once considered to be the 8th wonder of the world and largest natural deposit of emulsified asphalt. Here you can also see, to some extent, the architecture of the buildings outside the cathedral on Marine Square which is known today as Independence Square. A man in jacket and hat stands near the gateway to the church and its car park.
