    This monograph provides the following: 1) an historical overview of the development of the teacher education system in Trinidad and Tobago. 2) overview of both the education system and the teacher education system; 3) a preliminary analysis of teacher education curricula; 4) a discussion of the quality and effectiveness of teacher education, 5) an analysis of teacher identities, attitudes and roles; 6) an examination of resources for teacher education; and 7) a discussion of emerging issues.

    Anti-racist education and research: A vision for Caribbean education in the 21st century

    This is a theoretical paper intended to discuss ideas on how anti-racist education and research can be approached in the Caribbean context. The paper seeks to examine the role of, and challenges, to anti-racist education and research in a contemporary new epoch, one that is remarkably different in its celebration of cultural fragmentation and pluralism as against the universalizing, homogenizing effects of rationality and scientism. I would not attempt to argue that there is a consensus out there on what constitutes anti-racist education and research. I only draw attention to certain basic challenges for those interested in the conduct of anti-racist work in the Caribbean

    Challenges of Inclusive Schooling

    The author examines the topic of inclusive schooling against the background of personal experiences as a graduate student in a foreign university and as a teacher educator in the Caribbean. The article suggests that the starting point for developing an inclusive curriculum is for educators to acknowledge that racism, ethnicity, classism, and sexism are an integral part of Caribbean society. It also notes that the key to building a truly inclusive school is a transformation of the conventional curriculum, and for the adoption of new ways of thinking about schooling and education

    Dropout or Pushed Out?

    This article notes that school dropout is one of the most crucial issues facing education systems in the Caribbean, and identifies some of the reasons advanced for this phenomenon. It is recommended that stakeholders in the education system in Trinidad and Tobago acquaint themselves with the problems faced by students in order to provide recommendations for structural changes to deal with the dropout problem

    Transforming Our Classrooms

    This article discusses the approaches that have been adopted by teachers in classrooms in Trinidad and Tobago, which reflect a transmission or, at best, a transaction ideology. Although the transaction model is seen as a step in the right direction, it is suggested that this model does not provide an orientation towards "empowerment" and "informed responsible action." Instead, the transformation method, which asserts that students should learn to see relationships between themselves and their social environment and between themselves and all aspects of the curriculum, is recommended as an alternative pedagogical strategy for schools in Trinidad and Tobago
