Teacher Evaluation in the Bahamas: The Reactions and Perception of Teachers in the four Anglican Private Schools

Abstract

This study sought to examine the reactions and perceptions of teachers in four Anglican private schools in the Bahamas to the existing teacher evaluation practices—St. John’s College and St. Anne’s School on New Providence and Freeport Anglican High and Discovery Primary School (renamed Bishop Michael Eldon school in 2005) on Grand Bahama. Data were collected through a questionnaire administered to teachers of the four schools. The findings suggest that the traditional approach to teacher evaluation, based on the use of a rating form and brief classroom observation, is still used within Anglican Central Education Authority. Many teachers were uncomfortable with the evaluation process because the purposes of evaluation had not been clear and they had little part in developing instruments and inadequate input in the process.
