The Privy Council in London has upheld an appeal against the death sentence of two Barbadian death row prisoners. English attorney Anthony Metzer speaks about the Barbadian government's decision to challenge the 1993 Pratt and Morgan judgment. The Foreign Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Ralph Maraj is proposing that CARICOM should seek United Nations (UN) backing to declare the region a toxic waste free zone. The Jamaican government, on behalf of CARICOM, has asked the Panamanian government to prevent a ship carrying nuclear wastes from passing through the Panama Canal. The Haitian government fears a possible resurgence of political violence for Haiti's Carnival of Hope celebration. The Bahamas and Haiti have drawn up a framework agreement for the deportation of illegal Haitian refugees. Bahamas Governor General, Sir Orville Turnquest spoke about the rationale for deporting the Haitian refugees. One of Jamaica's leading construction firms, West Indies Home Contractors Limited (WIHCOH), is hoping to secure a major contract to build houses in South Africa. In English county cricket, Brian Lara has agreed to a new three year contract with Warwickshire commencing in 1996.en_US
