Abstract

In keeping with this theme” Agenda of the 90s,” this conference focused on the following objectives: 1) to explore teacher education strategies for enhancing teachers’ sensitivity to the societal context impinging on the effective execution of their role as classroom teachers; 2) to discuss ways in which the teacher education programme, especially with respect to field experiences, might be enhanced in order to equip student teachers with the knowledge, competencies, and attitudes needed for effective teaching in Eastern Caribbean schools; 3) to explore ways of strengthening the policy-making mechanisms involving the Faculty of Education and tertiary level institutions (TLIs) with specific reference to the design, delivery, evaluation and certification of their teacher education programmes; and 4) to provide a forum for discussion and collaborative decision making involving TLIs, Ministries of Education, and the Faculty of Education on matters of mutual concern in teacher education. Part 1 of the report contains the papers presented, while Part 2 covers the Business Session. The appendices include a copy of the conference programme, and data on teachers’ colleges in the Eastern Caribbean.
