| dc.description.abstract | This paper describes a project called PLEASE (Promoting Learning Effectiveness and Success in Examinations), which is an attempt to improve the state of mathematics learning and teaching at various levels in the education system. Its major aim is to find ways of helping students to learn better and attain more and, in so doing, have greater success in their examinations, whether internal to the institution or set by an external examination board. Analysis of the preliminary data gathered indicates that: 1) students need to understand not only what they are doing, but why, in order to improve their attainment and enjoy their study of mathematics; 2) teachers need to make lessons more interesting; 3) students must apply themselves more assiduously to their work; 4) teacher have to find ways of helping students to understand the concepts more clearly; and 5) teachers must be able to help students relate the use of mathematics to everyday life. | |
