Against the background of a need to raise the quality of science education in developing countries, where financial resources have dwindled drastically and where the school population is much larger than it was a few decades ago, this paper argues for a rethinking of the role of practical work in such settings. It makes a case for the exploitation of indigenous resources and human resources in innovative ways to meet the challenge of providing science education of some integrity in those settings
