Abstract

This paper provides information on the provision made for the secondary education of girls in Barbados between 1875-1950, and sheds some light on the level of importance attached to the education of girls. The emergence of secondary education for girls in Barbados and the underlying educational philosophy that provided motivation are also examined. A look at the curriculum that developed during the years under review provides a useful guide to the destination of girls and their role in the island's society then and later on in its history. In the course of the discussion, the paper reveals the nature and extent of educational opportunities for girls vis-a-vis boys, as well as the inadequacy of the provisions for this group of students
