Abstract

This paper examines the role of research in the preparation and professional growth of university teachers. Major emphasis is on the role of research, but it is explicitly recognized that such matters as command of subject matter and mastery of teaching skills are also of vital importance in the preparation of university teachers. The paper assumes that both these skills are related to the matter of research, and it indicates the case for competence, by the university teacher, in each of these areas. It also gives some attention to some of the major constraints on the improvement of research capability in the region
