dc.description.abstract | This study aims to provide a concise summary of the state of education in the English-speaking countries of the Caribbean in general, but with special emphasis on Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. The state of education is examined against the background of the economic conditions and social directions of these countries, in such a manner as to highlight any functional relationships that exist between education and development. Basic indicators of the economies of the region are presented in the first section along with brief summaries of the socio-political orientation of the governments. This is followed by a survey of the labour force in the region, with particular emphasis on levels of employment and of education and training within the labour force. Against this background, a survey of the formal provisions for education is provided. The whole is used as a referential base for critical discussion of general and specific problems of education and development in the region. | en_US |
