This survey targeted 500 of the approximately 9,000 youth in the 15-24 age group living in Tobago. It sought to: 1) assess the extent to which alcohol and psychotropic drugs were being used by youths in Tobago; 2) measure the extent to which factors usually related to the use of substances, including alcohol, among youth actually occurred in Tobago; and 3) recommend alternatives to drug use on the basis of the findings. Data were obtained from 490 useful questionnaires, and were collected using the street intercept method. The results of the survey indicated that youth in Tobago are not exposed to the wide range of psychotropic substances available in metropolitan countries. However, about one third of the sample indicated that they had used cocaine or marijuana, which suggests that Tobago has a serious problem with substance abuse among youth. Recommendations for alleviating the problem include education, employment, alternatives in terms of recreational facilities, and law enforcement.
