This document presents the outcomes of three inter-related efforts undertaken by UNESCO, in collaboration with the technical staff of the respective countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, to examine the situation of their national education systems. Part One presents an analysis of the state of education in the region during the 1980-1994 period. In this section, the main elements and pertinent relationships which give rise to reform trends are identified, facilitating comparisons with those observed in each country. Part Two examines student flows and other essential elements for the same period, which allow definition of some aspect of the education system characteristic of each country. Part Three contains statistical tables, which facilitate the evaluation of specific aspects of the situation that prevails in a particular country, the region, sub-region or a similar country.en_US
