Literacy in the English-speaking Caribbean
Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to describe and analyse the state of literacy in the region using the available indicators. Particular attention was paid to those demographic characteristics of the region that appeared to relate to literacy, as well as to the conditions within the educational systems that influence progress towards full literacy. The nature of the society in the region was examined as far as it elucidated the state of illiteracy. It describes and discusses programmes that had been undertaken to effect adult literacy or which were planned for implementation. Suggestions are made on the manner in which the region might proceed towards the elimination of illiteracy
