In 1983, the US-based Atlantic Center for the Environment and the Foundation for PRIDE (Protection of Reefs and Islands from Degradation and Exploitation) based in the Turks and Caicos Islands, joined forces in a cooperative exchange programme focusing on environmental education. The background and major activities of the programme are discussed, with special attention to educational efforts of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Key assumptions underlying the programme are examined and results evaluated. Finally, the Atlantic Center's plan to extend the exchange programme to other countries in the Caribbean region is outlined
