This paper is premised on the view that the language factor in the socio-politics of the Caribbean is sufficiently important that true development cannot be achieved without addressing it. The paper identifies the constant linguistic factors that have to be accounted for in developmental processes, and which are susceptible to modification by changes in language policy. Specific elements of a language policy within education, which can contribute to the development of the region, are discussed.
