Abstract
The survey of the stock of secondary school teachers in Trinidad and Tobago during the 1999-2000 academic year covered the various categories of teachers in the public secondary school sector and focused on a number of critical variables. The study covered 5,213 teachers in 101 government and government-assisted secondary schools, of whom 41 percent was male and 59 percent was female with an average age of 41 years; the average age of males was 43, while that of females was 40. Teachers in the 40-49 age group accounted for 56 percent of all teachers, with those in the 50-59 age group accounting for 20 percent. Of the teachers surveyed, 63 percent had a university degree, 22 percent had a diploma of certificate, and 14 percent had A’ and O’ Levels. Less than half of all teachers (46 percent) had professional training. Of these, only 19 percent (989) had a professional university degree/diploma while 27 percent (1,430) had a teacher’s diploma.
