dc.description
Audio tape recordings are an important element in this inexpensive programme, the aim of which was to improve mathematics instruction in Grades 1-9 in Jamaica, especially through inservice teacher education. The introduction of modern mathematics called for a better teacher preparation. Supplementary support to the textbooks offering teachers teaching guides and self-instructional aids were required. This programme was designed to meet these needs and to offer: 1) a flexible resource for teacher inservice education, especially in remote schools where teachers are unable to participate in ordinary training; 2) reference material in support of the new curriculum; 3) reduction of the per-capita cost of inservice education and a model for introduction of other new subjects. The project was developed by the School of Education, The University of the West Indies (UWI) in collaboration with a USA consultant and with financial support from a local industrial concern. Information is provided on historical development, staff, working methods, evaluation, and expenditures
