The Cuban delegation at the Geneva peace talks aimed at ending the thirteen year war in Angola and achieving the independence of Namibia from South Africa, condemns a public statement made by South Africa’s Foreign Minister. The statement offered a withdrawal of South African troops from Namibia on condition that the fifty thousand Cuban troops in Angola withdraw by June 1989. Points of contention from the Cuban delegation’s side were the fact that the statement was not only made public despite a news media embargo, but also that the Cuban and Angolan delegations did not first have the opportunity to respond to the proposal privately.
