Trade unionism and professionalism in the secondary school system in Barbados: The role of staff representatives
Abstract
This article focuses on the role and purpose of the steward in secondary schools. Rather than perceiving their role as simply guarantors of trade union interest, staff representatives are encouraged to highlight matters that hinder educational and professional development in schools. It is suggested that, in this regard, the entire school system should be examined, with the teachers' union seeking to meaningfully influence its process of development through a clear, well-defined vision of the role of the school in contemporary Barbadian society
