This program features updates on the devastating effects of hurricane Gilbert on the island of Jamaica. It also reports on the latest incidence of political violence in Haiti, where five persons are killed and more than sixty are injured in an attack carried out in the church of outspoken Roman Catholic priest Fr. Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Also highlighted is the plight of Surinamese refugees in the Netherlands, who face expulsion back to their homeland due to a reversal in the Dutch government's policy which allowed refugees to stay in the Netherlands without being granted asylum. The program also includes a brief interview with the B.B.C.'s Alexander Thompson and Sir. James Tudor, who discuss the role of small island states of the Caribbean within the context of the Latin American/Caribbean region. Sir Tudor makes a case for the small states having a greater say in the events that impact the region.en_US
