2. The Chief Minister, Hubert Hughes announced that there will be a snap election in Anguilla on Friday the 10th. A letter was sent to Governor Robert Harris by Chief Minister Hughes requesting that Anguilla’s House of Assembly be dissolved the day before the election. The election announcement came after the dismissal of Leroy Rogers, the Speaker of the House by the island’s High Court. (00:24-01:11)
3. American Airlines have decided to cut air ticket commission. This angered Travel agents in St. Lucia, who joined counterparts in several Caribbean islands who boycotted American Airlines. The St Lucian government was warned that the decision by American Airlines has implications for the broader Caribbean. (01:12-04:00)
4. As British tourists flock to Cuba this winter, there are concerns of the safety record of one of the airlines use to get them there. The Cuban national carrier Cubana, had 2 crashes in Guatemala and Venezuela over a 4 day period in December killing 48 people. Cubana has had 4 fatal crashes in the past years (04:01-06:09)
5. There was a protest last week in Miami about the impending return of the Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez. Anti-Castro activists in Miami exile communities plan to meet to decide on whether they should restore their civil disobedience campaign. They now have to await the future of Elan at the Federal level. (06:10-10:42)
6. The Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Organizations (CANTO) has been trying to resolve the disputes raised by Guyana against America’s telecommunications giant ATandT. A committee has been established to look into the issue after the matter was taken before the international body for telecommunications, the ITU. (10:43-13:27)
7. CARICOM officials are looking forward to the Haitians’ local and legislative elections to be held in March and April. These should have taken place in November of the previous year. The officials are expecting a “greater degree of readiness to hold the elections” in spite of the previous delays. (13:28-15:53)
