dc.description.abstract | The international environmental organization, Greenpeace attempted to block a British freighter carrying a consignment of radioactive material from leaving a French port. Meanwhile, Jamaica has been lobbying the Panamanian government to block the passage of the freighter through the Panama Canal. Panamanian journalist Ana Valdez reports on the government's response to the request made by Jamaica and how Panamanians have reacted. Former American President Jimmy Carter visited Haiti during the preparation for upcoming elections. Michael Norton reports on the reactions of Haiti’s political activists to Carter's visit. In London, a father and son were given long jail sentences for smuggling cocaine into the UK concealed in coconuts. The sale of BWIA, former national airline of Trinidad and Tobago, faces a legal challenge by a new group - Caribbean nationals living in the US. In Jamaica, the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party is once again embroiled in a debate over the continued leadership of Mr. Edward Seaga. | en_US |
