Abstract
The report presents the findings of the committee that was set up to review the graduate programmes at the University of the West Indies (U.W.I.). The committee was required to 1) assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to U.W.I.’s graduate programmes—both taught and research; 2) assess current graduate programmes in terms of relevance, viability, disciplinary trends and scholarship, 3) assess postgraduate supervision and mentorship in departments and centres; 4) determine the financial, material, administrative and information support for graduate studies; 5) identify mechanisms to significantly improve the throughput of graduate students; develop quality assurance mechanisms in graduate programmes; 7) identify areas of cross-campus collaboration in graduate programmes in order to maximize efficiency, build capacity and competitiveness, and minimize duplication; 8) create/identify opportunities to significantly improve U.W.I.’s presence and impact in the “U.W.I. 12” countries; 9) identify income-earning opportunities for graduate programmes; and 10) determine the administrative structure that will best support graduate programmes at U.W.I.
