Abstract

This paper presents the report of a committee set up to review the examination process of the University of the West Indies (U.W.I.) by: 1) identifying the major problems affecting the examination process, 2) reviewing the “best practices” within UWI and at other institutions with a semester system and large classes, 3) assessing the degree of compatibility between the Examination Regulations and the requirements of the Banner system, 4) reviewing the method of assessment and marking of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) to see whether there are any lessons to be learnt, and 5) making succinct, clear and specific recommendations for change. Analysis of the data collected indicated that while commendable efforts have been made to maintain a credible and trustworthy examination process, there are several problems that contribute to a reduction in the efficiency and effectiveness of the process—administrative and logistical, as well as academic. Recommendations are provided
