dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to provide unequivocal guidelines for the development of classroom materials, methods of instruction, teacher training, and testing, which were fully applicable to the linguistic context of Trinidad and Tobago. The design of the study included: 1) study of the spoken and written English of school-children in Trinidad and Tobago, 2) assessment of the methods and materials used for English teaching as well as the conditions under which language teaching was conducted, and 3) evaluation of the existing tests and examinations for knowledge of English. The project appeared to have exerted some influence on the content of the New Primary School Syllabus, through the involvement of Clive Borely, School Supervisor III
