Abstract

This paper focuses on classroom teaching at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. It defines the components of teaching excellence and the factors that contribute to such excellence. The need to set specific goals in order to optimize the effectiveness of the teaching effort is underscored. It argues that excellence in teaching should constitute a deliberate, explicit, and perceived to be attainable objective of educational systems, particularly those of small developing nations with limited financial resources. The paper includes the results of an indicative survey of opinions regarding excellence in teaching held by primary, secondary and tertiary teachers, and undergraduate students. The major patterns are discussed as well as their implications for possible improvements to teaching effectiveness.
