Teacher education for an improved education system
Abstract
This paper is concerned with the function of the teacher as a significant agent in the educational development of the child. Its basic concern relates to proposals for change in teacher education to improve the quality of the education system for learners. Other related issues discussed are: 1) whether the teacher is an important factor in promoting or prohibiting educational growth; 2) how to achieve better quality recruits for training and 3) incentives that may be applied for motivating teachers to commit themselves to education. The status of the teaching profession is briefly reviewed and selected problems are identified as a background to proposals for change
