dc.description.abstractThis article examines the socio-historical background of science education in an effort to explain the present position. It pinpoints trends towards: 1) a child-centred, activity-oriented approach; 2) the integrated approach; 3) an environmental approach; 4) the social implications of science; and 5) an emphasis on scientific literacy. Each trend is examined in light of constraints on implementation and possible solutions
