In this study, 468 people (aged 16-40 yrs) from Barbados rated the importance of various explanations for unemployment in their country. The 20 explanations provided showed a clear structure. The six factors that emerged from them were: 1) lack of effort on the part of the unemployed, 2) lack of ability, 3) failure of trade unions, 4) effects of government policy, 5) regional and worldwide changes, and 6) poor industrial management. Endorsement of these explanations was related to sex, age, and education, but was not related clearly to employment status
