Description
After exploring the conditions that gave rise to the need for education to be linked with productive work (EPW) in the school system, this paper describes the technical/vocational institutions that have implemented EPW programmes in Jamaica. The work experience programmes in Jamaican educational institutions are critically assessed, as well as the work-study programmes in West Indies College, Knox College, and the Jose Marti Secondary School. A discussion of nonformal education is included, and programmes such as the Vocational Training Development Institute, the Human Employment and Resource Training Programme, and the various training schemes offered by the Jamaica Industrial Development Corporation are described. The paper concludes with an assessment of the limitations and possibilities in linking education with productive work in the Jamaican educational system
