dc.description.abstractThis survey attempted to assess the extent of substance abuse among the secondary school population and to describe the socio-demographic characteristics of substance-using students and the behaviours and the consequences associated with substance use. A two-stage sample design was used to select the participating students and the questionnaire was administered to 2,192 students from 20 schools. Results showed that alcohol is still the most widely used drug followed by cigarettes, marijuana, and cocaine—91.9 percent using alcohol, 45.7 percent cigarettes, 6.3 percent marijuana, and 1.1 percent cocaine. Males were more likely to use cigarettes, marijuana and cocaine, and females exceeded males in the use of alcohol.
