Abstract
This paper discusses the role of the teacher in dealing with the problem of drug abuse. Teachers are seen as the early-warning system, therefore they must be taught to recognize the early signs of addiction, and the techniques for getting the confidence of the student in order to provide advice and referral. Other areas which are identified for teacher involvement include: 1) encouraging the participation of students in extra-curricular activities, and 2) health and family life education programmes.
