Abstract
The teaching of English in the Caribbean has been unaffected by linguistic discoveries of theories except to the extent that there is a slow process of radiation from the universities outward/downward. This is unfortunate since much of the research carried out has been justified in terms of practical educational needs. This paper attempts to transfer some of the emphasis of language research to the learning situation in the school, and to examine assumptions, problems, and models
