dc.description
This paper attempts to develop a historical analysis of the change from a pre-capitalist society to a capitalist society focusing on changes in education as a derivative of underlying economic changes. The setting up of church schools for former slaves, and later, the establishment of state secular schools for the lower classes of Guyanese society, were preceded by economic changes and were dependent upon them. In particular, the development of the educational system reflected the changes in the social relations of production and the extension of the social division of labour
